CHAPTER 4
(1490 B.C.)
SIN OFFERINGS
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the Children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the Commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them (Chapter 4 represents the Sin Offering; Christ became a Sin Offering on the Cross [Isa. 53:10]; the words in this Verse, through ignorance, signified that a person, irrespective of his knowledge of the Word of God, cannot really know what sin actually is; this is humbling and comforting; it reveals that the efficacy of Christs Atonement for sin is not to be measured by mans consciousness of sin, but by Gods measurement of it; to believe this fact fills the heart with a Divine peace):
If the Priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he has sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a Sin Offering. (In the Burnt Offering, the sinlessness of the victim was transferred to the worshipper. In the Sin Offering, the sinfulness of the sinner was transferred to the victim.)
And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullocks head, and kill the bullock before the LORD. (The sin of ignorance is committed constantly at the present time, by both Preacher and people. Not understanding the Cross, millions make other things the object of their faith, which, in effect, puts them in the position of committing the sin of spiritual adultery [Rom. 7:1-4]. Even though this sin, at least most of the time, is committed in ignorance, it is still sin before God, and gross sin at that!)
And the Priest that is anointed shall take of the bullocks blood, and bring it to the Tabernacle of the congregation:
And the Priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the Veil of the Sanctuary (this blood was sprinkled on the Altar of Incense; it was sprinkled seven times, denoting a complete and full cleansing afforded by Christ; seven is Gods number of completion and perfection).
And the Priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the Altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the Tabernacle of the congregation (the blood applied to the four horns of the Altar of Incense speaks to the fact that even though forgiveness for Believers is available at all times, which the golden Altar of Incense represents, the horns, which speak of dominion, testify to us that we in fact should have dominion over all sin; but it also testifies to the fact that such dominion cannot come about except by the Cross of Christ and our Faith in that Finished Work, typified by the blood applied to the horns [Rom. 6:3-14]); and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the Altar of the Burnt Offering, which is at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation. (The effectiveness of the blood applied to the horns of the Altar of Incense is all based upon the fact that a Whole Burnt Offering has been originally offered on the Brazen Altar, which means that everything is predicated on that.
In the Redemption of the transgressor, the Priest did everything; the man, nothing. He stood, he looked, he listened, he believed! Like action today in relation to Christ on the Cross ensures conscious Salvation.)
And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock for the Sin Offering; the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,
And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away,
As it was taken off from the bullock of the Sacrifice of Peace Offerings: and the Priest shall burn them upon the Altar of the Burnt Offering.
And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung,
Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt. (The carcass of the slain animal was not to be burned upon the Brazen Altar, at least as it regards the Sin Offering, but rather taken to a place without the camp, and burned there. Why?
This means that when the Christian sins, as bad as it is, the Christian doesnt have to get saved all over again. In the Sin Offering, we see the means and the manner by which relationship is restored. Ashes signify that what was there has been consumed, typifying our sin being consumed by Christ in His Sacrificial, Atoning Work. Properly confessed, there is nothing left of those sins.)
LAWS
And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the Commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty (as we have stated, sins of ignorance are not confined only to Old Testament times; in fact, more Believers presently are committing such sins than ever before in history; if the Believer doesnt understand the Cross as it regards our Sanctification [Rom., Chpt. 6], such a Believer will attempt to live this life by means of the flesh; God labels such as spiritual adultery [Rom. 7:1-4]; such constitutes trust placed in anything other than Christ and the Cross, and is sin [Rom. 8:8]);
When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the Tabernacle of the congregation (this Passage proclaims the fact that the only solution for sin of any nature is the Cross; then and now the Believer is directed to the Cross).
And the Elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD (transferring the guilt to the innocent victim, typifying Christ on the Cross suffering for our sins): and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD (signifying Christ Who died for our sins).
And the Priest Who is anointed shall bring of the bullocks blood to the Tabernacle of the congregation (the Blood of Jesus Christ alone cleanses from all sin, of which this is a Type [I Jn. 1:7]):
And the Priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the Veil (sprinkle it on the Altar of Incense; seven times signifies the Perfect Redemption afforded by Christ).
And he shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the Altar which is before the LORD, that is in the Tabernacle of the congregation (these four horns on the Altar of Incense signified the dominion that the Believer is to have over all sin [Rom. 6:14]; the blood being applied to all four of the horns tells us that the Believer can have total and complete victory within his life; if the Believer properly places his faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, understanding that all that he receives from the Lord comes to him directly through the Cross, this will give the Holy Spirit latitude to work in ones life, thereby bringing about victory over the world, the flesh, and the Devil; in fact, this is Gods Prescribed Order, and His only prescribed order; anything else will bring defeat [Gal. 5:4-5]), and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the Altar of the Burnt Offering (the Brazen Altar), which is at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation (forgiveness and victory are all made possible by the Cross, and the Cross alone, typified by the Brazen Altar, and the blood being poured out at its base).
And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it upon the Altar (the fat typifies Blessing and prosperity, which can only come through Christ, and what He has done for us at the Cross).
And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a Sin Offering, so shall he do with this: and the Priest shall make an Atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them (God, being just, passes over sin until it is made known by the conscience, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; then He holds Believers responsible and will judge and severely chastise them, if the sin is allowed to continue [Jn. 16:7-11; Rom. 2:12-16]).
And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a Sin Offering for the congregation. (While the fat was to be burned on the Altar, with the blood poured out at its base, the carcass of the animal, constituting the Sin Offering, must be taken outside the camp and burned. The blood signifies that the sin is atoned, and the carcass being burned outside the camp signifies that all sin is now gone.)
When a ruler has sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the Commandments of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty;
Or if his sin, wherein he has sinned, come to his knowledge; he shall bring his Offering, a kid of the goats, a male without blemish (if it is to be noticed, even though the ritual varied a little bit according to who it was that sinned, in effect, the remedy was the same, the shed blood of the innocent victim, typifying Christ):
And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the Burnt Offering before the LORD: it is a Sin Offering. (As with all, even if it is a Priest or a ruler, the guilt of sin must be transferred to the innocent victim, and is done so by the laying on of hands on the head of the victim, all typifying Christ. As stated, in the Whole Burnt Offering, the perfection of the victim is passed to the sinner. In the Sin Offering, the sin of the individual is passed to the innocent victim, all typifying Christ [Heb. 7:27].)
And the Priest shall take of the blood of the Sin Offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the Altar of Burnt Offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the Altar of Burnt Offering (the blood being applied to the four horns at the four corners of the Brazen Altar typify that Christ and Him Crucified is the only answer for the sin of humanity, and that refers to all of humanity [Jn. 3:16]).
And he shall burn all his fat upon the Altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of Peace Offerings: and the Priest shall make an Atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.
And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he does somewhat against any of the Commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;
Or if his sin, which he has sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his Offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has sinned. (As is obvious here, in the eyes of God, sin is sin, irrespective as to who commits it. It must be addressed and, in essence, addressed the same way, even if its a common person, or a ruler, or a Priest, or even the entirety of the nation of Israel. The only answer is the Cross.)
And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the Sin Offering, and slay the Sin Offering in the place of the Burnt Offering (Jesus became a Sin Offering on the Cross [Isa. 53:10]).
And the Priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger and put it upon the horns of the Altar of Burnt Offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the Altar. (If it is to be noticed, the solution for all, with some minor variations, is the same. So, why the constant repetition? It is that we might know the seriousness of the matter, as it regards the horror of sin, and its only solution, which is the shed Blood of Jesus Christ [Eph. 2:13-18].)
And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the Sacrifice of Peace Offerings; and the Priest shall burn it upon the Altar for a sweet savour unto the LORD; and the Priest shall make an Atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him. (Under the Old Covenant, how could a person know for sure that he was forgiven? First of all, he had to place his faith in the trustworthiness of the Word spoken to him. Second, he had to understand the value of the Blood shed for him, at least in a sense, knowing that it pointed to One Who was to come.)
And if he bring a lamb for a Sin Offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish. (In this case, a female lamb was required, in effect stating that it was through Eve that the first temptation came, and that it would be through a woman that Redemption would come [Isa. 7:14].)
And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the Sin Offering, and slay it for a Sin Offering in the place where they kill the Burnt Offering.
And the Priest shall take of the blood of the Sin Offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the Altar of Burnt Offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the Altar:
And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the Sacrifice of the Peace Offerings; and the Priest shall burn them upon the Altar, according to the Offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the Priest shall make an Atonement for his sin that he has committed, and it shall be forgiven him. (In order to obtain forgiveness for his sin, the man said nothing, and did nothing, except to lay his hand upon the head of the spotless substitute, thus transferring his guilt and its doom to the substitute. The Law claimed the mans life as the just penalty for his sin. The sin being transferred, the Law then claimed the life of the substitute; and directly that life was surrendered, the full claim of the Law was satisfied and the man thereby saved, all typifying Christ.)
