CHAPTER 28

(1452 B.C.)

THE DAILY OFFERINGS

1And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

2Command the Children of Israel, and say unto them, My Offering, and My Bread for My Sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto Me, shall you observe to offer unto Me in their due season. (All of this, in some way, represented Christ, in either His Atoning, Mediatorial, or Intercessory Work. When He came, and went to the Cross, it was all fulfilled, for Christ is the end of the Law [Rom. 10:4].)

3And you shall say unto them, This is the Offering made by fire which you shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day-by-day, for a continual Burnt Offering.

4The one lamb you shall offer in the morning (9 a.m.), and the other lamb shall you offer at evening (3 p.m.);

5And a tenth part of an ephah of flour for a Meat Offering (a Thanksgiving Offering), mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil (oil derived from olives being crushed typified the Holy Spirit, Who was within and upon Christ).

6It is a continual Burnt Offering, which was ordained in Mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a Sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD.

7And the Drink Offering (symbolic of the Life of Christ poured out) thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the Holy Place shall you cause the strong wine to be poured unto the LORD for a Drink Offering.

8And the other lamb shall you offer at evening: as the Meat Offering of the morning, and as the Drink Offering thereof, you shall offer it, a Sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD (sweet to the Lord, simply because it represented Christ, Who was to come, and Who would redeem fallen humanity).

WEEKLY SACRIFICES

9And on the Sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a Meat Offering, mingled with oil, and the Drink Offering thereof (on the Sabbath, the Sacrifices were to be doubled regarding the lambs, two in the morning, and two in the evening):

10This is the Burnt Offering of every Sabbath, beside the continual Burnt Offering, and his Drink Offering.

MONTHLY SACRIFICES

11And in the beginnings of your months you shall offer a Burnt Offering unto the LORD; two young bullocks, and one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot (these were to be offered on the first day of each month, which would be the time of the full moon);

12And three tenth deals of flour for a Meat Offering, mingled with oil, for one bullock; and two tenth deals of flour for a Meat Offering, mingled with oil, for one ram;

13And a several tenth deal of flour mingled with oil for a Meat Offering unto one lamb; for a Burnt Offering of a sweet savour, a Sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD.

14And their Drink Offerings shall be half an hin of wine unto a bullock, and the third part of an hin unto a ram, and a fourth part of an hin unto a lamb: this is the Burnt Offering of every month throughout the months of the year.

15And one kid of the goats for a Sin Offering unto the LORD shall be offered, beside the continual Burnt Offering, and his Drink Offering. (The doctrine of these Offerings and those of Leviticus is the same, i.e., life and righteousness through an atoning Saviour: and that doctrine was as fresh and as precious to Moses at the close as at the beginning of his Ministry.

The Sacrifices in Leviticus mainly provided for the life of the Wilderness; these in Numbers for that of the Promised Land.

The Levitical Sacrifices rather set out, in type, the results of Christs Atonement and the blessing of sinners; the Offerings of these two Chapters direct attention to the glory and perfection of Him Who accomplished the Atonement.

But, it will be noted throughout these Chapters that no matter what the day or feast, when in Canaan, the Sin Offering was never to be omitted; for no spiritual attainment negates the need of the Atoning Death of Christ. Williams.)

THE PASSOVER

16And in the fourteenth day of the first month is the Passover of the LORD (this was conducted once a year, even as all the Feasts; the first month corresponded with our April; it was a Type of the Death of Christ on the Cross).

UNLEAVENED BREAD

17And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten (this Feast began a day after the Passover; it pictured the Perfect life of Christ).

18In the first day shall be an holy convocation; you shall do no manner of servile work therein (Salvation is by faith, and not of works [Eph. 2:8-9]; ironically enough, the Law was made up entirely of works; however, it pointed toward the One Who was to come, Who would do away with all works, because of His great Work at the Cross of Calvary):

19But you shall offer a Sacrifice made by fire for a Burnt Offering unto the LORD; two young bullocks, and one ram, and seven lambs of the first year: they shall be unto you without blemish (the Offerings are outlined here as to what will be done when they came into the Promised Land; thus, the great lesson is taught that Salvation from Egypt, maintenance in the Desert, and rest in the Promised Land are all based upon the Precious Blood of Christ):

20And their Meat Offering (Thanksgiving Offering) shall be of flour (typifying the Perfect Life of Christ) mingled with oil (typifying the Holy Spirit upon and within Christ [Lk. 4:18-19]): three tenth deals shall you offer for a bullock, and two tenth deals for a ram (the Thanksgiving Offering was to be presented along with the Burnt Offering; in one way or the other, all typified Christ in His Mediatorial, Intercessory, and Atoning Work);

21A several tenth deal shall you offer for every lamb (Thanksgiving Offering), throughout the seven lambs:

22And one goat for a Sin Offering, to make an Atonement for you. (As we have stated, it must be noted that no matter what the day or the Feast, when in Canaan, the Sin Offering was never to be omitted; for no spiritual work can be accomplished without there first being the atoning Death of Christ, as typified by the Sin Offering. This means that presently we are to understand that our Salvation, and our victorious daily living, are predicated solely on the Cross of Christ. The moment we cease to make the Cross of Christ the total object of our faith, at that moment, we are in the flesh, and cannot please God [Rom. 8:8].)

23You shall offer these beside the Burnt Offering in the morning, which is for a continual Burnt Offering (the Burnt Offering typified Christ giving His all, for this was the only Offering which was wholly burned on the Altar; it proclaimed the Perfection of Christ, the all of Christ, given to the believing sinner).

24After this manner you shall offer daily, throughout the seven days (of Unleavened Bread), the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: it shall be offered beside the continual Burnt Offering, and his Drink Offering (this was the Offering made of flour and oil, in other words, a cereal or bread Offering, which was the Thanksgiving Offering, but referred to as the Meat Offering).

25And on the seventh day you shall have an holy convocation; you shall do no servile work (regarding the people, no work was to be done on the first and seventh day of Unleavened Bread, which immediately followed the Passover; as stated, this portrayed the fact that Salvation is entirely of Grace through Faith, and not of Works [Eph. 2:8-9]).

FEAST OF PENTECOST

26Also in the day of the firstfruits, when you bring a new Meat Offering unto the LORD, after your weeks be out (seven weeks after the Passover), you shall have an holy convocation; you shall do no servile work (this is the Feast of Pentecost, held the last of May; it typified Christ as the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit [Mat. 3:11]):

27But you shall offer the Burnt Offering for a sweet savour unto the LORD; two young bullocks, one ram, seven lambs of the first year;

28And their Meat Offering of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto one bullock, two tenth deals unto one ram,

29A several tenth deal unto one lamb, throughout the seven lambs;

30And one kid of the goats, to make an atonement for you (a Sin Offering).

31You shall offer them beside the continual Burnt Offering, and his Meat Offering, (they shall be unto you without blemish) and their Drink Offerings (the last Offering typified the Life of Christ poured out on the Cross of Christ).
