CHAPTER 124

THE AUTHOR IS DAVID: PRAISE FOR DELIVERANCE

If it had not been the LORD Who was on our side, now may Israel say (the folly of seeking the trembling hand of man is folly indeed! The Lord Alone is the Saviour);

If it had not been the LORD Who was on our side, when men rose up against us (Satan uses men; almost always they are men of religion; they do the work of their father, the Devil):

Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us (the Lord, when calling past victories to remembrance, animates Israel to trust for present ones):

Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. (The enemy here is compared to a raging flood.)

Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.

Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. (In a vainglorious cylinder of Sennacheribs, now in the British Museum in London, the proud monarch records that he shut up Hezekiah in Jerusalem as a bird in a cage. But the Scriptures of Truth relate that the snare of the fowler was broken and the bird escaped [II Chron., Chpt. 32]. As well, the Holy Spirit through David wrote this hundreds of years before the fact.)

Our help is in the Name of the LORD, Who made Heaven and Earth. (How so much the Holy Spirit implores us to look to the Lord, and not man!)
