CHAPTER 127

WRITTEN BY SOLOMON: TRUSTING GOD IS FRUITFUL

1Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain who build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman wakes but in vain. (The sense of this Verse is that faith contrasts the sufficiency of God with the insufficiency of man.)

2It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He gives His beloved sleep. (The argument of this Verse is that God gives to His loved ones, while asleep, treasures that men toil for early and late in vain.)

3Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is His reward. (The house built by the Lord will be full of children, built of living stones a multitude of redeemed sinners that no man can number [I Pet. 2:5; Rev. 7:9].)

4As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. (God is building a spiritual house of sons. The Mighty Man is the Lord Jesus Christ. These sons, loved and energized by Him, become more than conquerors.)

5Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. (The Man is Jesus Christ. The great price paid at Calvary was not in vain. Millions have flocked and will flock to His banner, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against them [Mat. 16:18].)
