CHAPTER 5
(1048 B.C.)
DAVID MADE KING OVER ALL ISRAEL
1Then came all the Tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spoke, saying, Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. (Finally, after so much bloodshed, the Will of God begins to be carried out in Israel. It was easy to get Saul, mans choice, on the throne; however, it was difficult to get David, Gods choice, on the throne.)
2Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were he who led out and brought in Israel: and the LORD said to you, You shall feed My people Israel, and you shall be a Captain over Israel (the Elders of Israel knew this all the time, and yet waited seven and a half years to carry out the Will of God).
3So all the Elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. (Actually, this was the third anointing; first, by Samuel, when David was but a boy; second, when he was anointed to be king over Judah; and now, over the entirety of Israel. Why did it take Israel so long to do this?
Believers, regrettably, are not prone to do right, until its in their best interest to do so. So, the Elders of Israel will now anoint David to be king over all of Israel, because they think its in their best interest.)
4David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. (David was a Type of Christ; therefore, Christ began His public ministry when He was 30 years old. He reigned over the powers of darkness, albeit not over Israel. One day soon He will reign, not only over the powers of darkness, but over Israel as well and, in fact, over the entirety of the world.)
5In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
DAVID CAPTURES JERUSALEM
6And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land (though the Jebusites had been conquered by Joshua [Josh. 11:3], and Jerusalem captured [Judg. 1:8], yet, as the Children of Judah did not occupy it, but set the city on fire, it seems to have been soon repopulated by its old inhabitants; through the entirety of his forty-year reign, Saul never captured it either; so we had the enemy situated right in the middle of the Promised Land; the taking of this city was the first thing that David did; if we do not destroy the enemy within, we will be ultimately defeated by the enemy without, as was Saul!): which spoke unto David, saying, Except you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither (to paraphrase, the Jebusites taunted David by saying, We are so strong, and you are so weak, our blind and lame can keep you out of the city; to be sure, Satan will taunt the Believer, telling him that there is no way that he can be victorious).
7Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. (It seems that the Seventy-sixth Psalm may have been written to glorify God and to commemorate this great victory. The Lord intends for that which has been the stronghold of Satan in our lives to become the stronghold of Zion. This can be, but only if our Faith is exclusively in Christ and the Cross, which then gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our lives [Rom. 8:1-2, 11, 13].)
8And David said on that day, Whosoever gets up to the gutter, and smites the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of Davids soul, he shall be chief and Captain (in essence, David is saying, in the spiritual sense, that he hated anything that would cause Israel to be spiritually lame or blind). Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. (This is not meant to be a sarcastic statement regarding the handicapped, but rather it is said in the spiritual sense. No Believer needs to be spiritually blind or lame. But regrettably, due to not understanding the Cross, most presently are!)
9So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built roundabout from Millo and inward. (The gutter mentioned in Verse 8 had to do with an underground water tunnel, through which Joabs men found their way into the city, which was otherwise impregnable. This is a Type of the water of life afforded only by Christ, and what He did at the Cross, which then affords the help of the Holy Spirit [Rom. 8:1-2, 11; Jn. 7:37-39].)
10And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him. (Had he not dislodged this cancer right in the midst of Israel, he would not have gone on and grown great. If you as a Believer allow strongholds of Satan to remain in your life, they will destroy you. They must be removed, and they can be removed, by Faith in Christ and the Cross.)
HIRAM BUILDS DAVID A HOUSE
11And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. (When David, the Type of Christ, became king, Hiram, the Gentile, brought gifts to David; likewise, the Gentile world will bring gifts to Christ when He begins to rule in the Kingdom Age.)
12And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for His People Israels sake. (It was the Will of the Lord for David to be the first king of Israel, and not Saul; however, the people jumped the gun, so to speak, demanding a king before it was time, and Saul was the result. It didnt turn out well. Now, with Israel in the center of Gods Will, the Nation will prosper greatly.)
DAVIDS FAMILY AT JERUSALEM
13And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.
14And these be the names of those who were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,
15Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
16And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet. (Verses 13-16 refer to Davids polygamy, which was not the Will of God; however, Grace in the midst of failure will shine. In the Fourteenth Verse, the two names Nathan and Solomon are given unto us. The Davidic line all the way to Christ will follow through Solomon. As well, the kingly line through Mary will come through Nathan.)
DAVID DEFEATS THE PHILISTINES
17But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel (Satan has little concern until he hears of the anointing; nothing will break his yoke except the anointing), all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold. (The moment the person makes Jesus King in his life, the Philistines will appear. Many are discouraged and surprised on meeting strong opposition directly upon the establishment of Christs Kingdom in their hearts; but it must ever be so till He comes in glory.)
18The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim (Rephaim means giants; so Satan throws his biggest and his best at us).
19And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? will You deliver them into my hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand (as Believers, we must seek the counsel of the Lord in everything; having that, we cannot lose; and, to be sure, if we ask, He will hear and answer [Lk. 11:5-13]).
20And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD has broken forth upon my enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim (Baal-perazim means the plain of breaches; David made a breach in the lines of the Philistines).
21And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them (should have been translated, took them away; they took them as trophies, showing that these gods were helpless!).
22And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim (Satan will always be back; the battle is unceasing, this fighting the good fight of Faith [I Tim. 6:12]).
23And when David enquired of the LORD, He said, You shall not go up (previously, the Lord had said, Go up; now, He says, You shall not go up; we must never take the Will of God for granted; what may have been His Will previously, may not be His Will presently!); but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees (the Philistines, no doubt, would have been expecting the army of Israel to come the same way as they did before).
24And let it be, when you hear the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then you shall bestir yourself: for then shall the LORD go out before you, to smite the host of the Philistines. (The sound of a going meant the sound of a mighty army on the march, which struck terror to the Philistines, and caused them to be confused and panic-stricken. It is said that the sound was the noise of horses hoofs. The Philistines would have reasoned that some other mighty army was appearing suddenly behind them to help David. This was Gods Way of bringing the victory. How easy are His Ways; how difficult are our ways!)
25And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until you come to Gazer.
