CHAPTER 6

(2448 B.C.)

WICKEDNESS OF MANKIND

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the Earth, and daughters were born unto them (the events of this Chapter probably begin at about the time of Enoch, which was about a thousand years before the flood. There were, no doubt, several millions of people on the face of the Earth at that time. Verse 1 is not meant to imply that the births of baby girls were more than that of baby boys, but is rather meant to set up the narrative for that which is about to be said),

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose (the sons of God portrayed here refer to fallen Angels, which had thrown in their lot with Lucifer, who led a revolution against God some time in eternity past; in order to spoil the human lineage through which the Messiah would ultimately come, they would seek to corrupt that lineage, and to do so by marrying the daughters of men, thereby producing a mongrel race, so to speak, of which at least some of these offspring turned out to be giants; at any rate, all who were the result of such a union were tainted; the term sons of God in the Old Testament, at least as it is used here, is never used of human beings, but always of Angels, whether righteous or fallen [Job 1:6; 2:1]; in his short Epistle, Jude mentions these particular Angels. He said that they kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation; he then said what their sin was: going after strange flesh. Concerning this, Jude also said that God has reserved [them] in everlasting chains unto darkness unto the Judgment of the great day [Jude, Vss. 6-7]).

THE WARNING OF GOD

And the LORD said, My Spirit (Holy Spirit) shall not always strive with man (the Lord is speaking here of the man, Adam, and not mankind in general), for that he also is flesh (refers to the fact that even though the first man was created personally by God, he still was flesh, and because of the Fall must ultimately die): yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years (from the time of this announcement, Adam was to be given 120 years to repent; there is no evidence that he did; many think that this 120 years refer to the time limit to repent before the Flood; however, it has nothing to do with the Flood, as we will later prove).

There were giants in the Earth in those days (as a result of the union of the fallen Angels with the daughters of men); and also after that (those days speak of the time before the Flood, while also after that speaks of the time after the Flood; in fact, Goliath, who was killed by David, was one of those specimens), when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown (these terms, mighty men, men of renown shoot down the hypotheses of these terms referring merely to the lineage of Seth and the lineage of Cain).

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the Earth (these men of renown, the giants, were developing more and more ways of wickedness), and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Due to this infestation, the evil began with the very thought processes, and incorporated every human being; this was a continuous action of evil which never let up, and constantly grew more degrading).

And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the Earth (God does not change as it regards His Nature; however, the fact that the Lord repents presents the truth that God, in consistency with His Immutability, assumes a changed position in respect to changed man), and it grieved Him at His Heart (this is not merely an anthropomorphic statement, as some claim, but a true statement regarding the Nature of God; sin grieves the Lord!).

And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the Earth (the wickedness of man had become so great, if God had not done this, man would ultimately have destroyed himself, although it would have taken much longer. Sin has to be judged, and inevitably will be judged); both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents Me that I have made them (the animal kingdom was made for man, and if man is destroyed, there is no more purpose or reason for the animal kingdom; so it must be destroyed as well).

NOAH AND THE ARK

But Noah found Grace in the sight of the LORD (this is the first time that Grace is mentioned in the Bible. Grace refers to the Goodness of God extended to undeserving man).

These are the generations of Noah (the Holy Spirit brings this out, because Noah and his family were perfect in their lineage, in that it had not been corrupted by the union of fallen angels and women): Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations (Noah was justified before God by Faith in the Promised Seed; for Paul later said that he was an heir of the Righteousness which is by Faith [Heb. 11:7]), and Noah walked with God (this was the only man on the face of the Earth at this time of which this could be said).

And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth (we learn from the last Verse of the previous Chapter that these sons were not born to Noah until he was some 500 years old).

The Earth also was corrupt before God, and the Earth was filled with violence (meaning that all were corrupted respecting the lineage concerning the union of fallen angels and women).

And God looked upon the Earth, and, behold, it was corrupt (God looked denotes a special observance, as though He had instituted an inquiry into its real condition [Ps. 14:2; 33:13-14]; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the Earth (the lineage of the entire race, due to the union of fallen angels and women, was marred. This was the plan of Satan to keep the Redeemer from coming into the world, Who could only function through an uncorrupted lineage. Other than Noah and his family, the entirety of the human race was polluted).

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me (the Lord had investigated the situation thoroughly); for the Earth is filled with violence through them (the Hebrew says, For the Earth is filled with violence from their faces; the idea is, they knew what they were doing, and thereby, in effect, dared God to stop them); and, behold, I will destroy them with the Earth (God had no choice! but for Noah, the human race would have been no more, and this world would have been turned back to a place without form, and void, with darkness upon the face of the deep [Gen. 1:2]).

Make thee an Ark of gopher wood (the Ark was a Type of Christ); rooms shall you make in the Ark, and shall pitch it within and without with pitch.

And this is the fashion which you shall make it of: The length of the Ark shall be three hundred cubits, the width of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits (using 18 inches to the cubit, it was to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high).

A window shall you make to the Ark, and in a cubit shall you finish it above; and the door of the Ark shall you set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shall you make it (the Hebrew words translated window and door carry a different meaning than appears on the surface; for instance, the word window was evidently a means, not merely of lighting the Ark, but also of ventilating it; it probably was an open space about 18 inches high, running all around the Ark, which would have given a sufficient supply of air, and would have been protected by the overhanging eaves of the roof; as well, it is believed that the door probably extended throughout the three floors or stories. The Ark would probably have displaced about 30,000 tons or more; consequently, it was a monstrous ship).

And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the Earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the Earth shall die (this referred to all things, with the exception of the fish in the sea [Vs. 20]).

But with you will I establish My Covenant (this is the first time that the word Covenant is used in the Bible. This pertains to the Covenant of the Promised Seed [Gen. 3:15]); and you shall come into the Ark, you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons wives with you (presents the fact that his entire family was saved).

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shall you bring into the Ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female (Scientists declare the distinct species of four-footed animals to be about 250; if this number be doubled, and a certain proportion multiplied by 7 for the clean animals, and if an equal number of birds be added and 12 cubic feet allotted to each animal and to each bird, the total number of cubic feet so used would be about one million, leaving approximately two million cubic feet for provisions; so I think it should be obvious that there was an abundance of room in the Ark for its inhabitants).

Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the Earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto you, to keep them alive (I think it is obvious, from the phrase, shall come unto you, that the Spirit of the Lord caused these animals and fowls to come to Noah).

And take you unto you of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to you; and it shall be for food for you, and for them (not knowing how long the flood waters would remain on the Earth, evidently Noah filled the vessel to the brim with provisions).

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he (nothing greater could be said about any man!).
